| Florice Paulson’s book says the railroad was involved in the naming of Oregon, but subsequent research has shown that not to be true.Once the railroad was established here in 1865, that reinforced the name of Oregon. However, in 1847, Rosell Babbit circulated a petition for a separate township organized under the name of Oregon. This area was under the government of the Town of Rome. On Feb. 11, 1847- an Act of the Territorial Legislature, approved a separate town called Oregon. Oregon Township was created by the division of Rome Township, which included what would become the towns of Fitchburg, Oregon, Dunn and Rutland. Local government was established and elections held.
