Serene Setting
Downtown Oregon about 1937
Clarice Christensen took this picture from upstairs in the old Gilbert Garage looking south
on N. Main St.  She said it was about 1937.
The hitching park is directly below.  The Standard Service Station Pontiac Sales and the gasoline pumps on the curb in front of Fincher's garage tell you a little more of our village then.
Across the street where the Model T Coup is setting, the awning on Nealie DeJean's dress and millinery shop is just visible.
This picture gives you a good view of our Main St. in 1937 and also the "fancy"cars we were driving.

Netherwood block
On the corner
The Netherwood block on the south side of the square has housed many different businesses over the years since it was built in 1898.  The corner store was a grocery and notions store.  About 1913 M.J. Wischhoff opened a jewelry store on the site.
In 1949 Drs. Roisum and Kellogg practiced medicine there and in 1951 Dr. Dukershein joined Dr. Kellogg.  They occupied the building until 1952 when they built their clinic on North Main.  Norman Champion and Earl Gransee bought the block and remodeled extensively for their heating and sheet metal business, the other businesses in the block and apartments upstairs.  Drs. Mark and Michael Nelson had dental offices there until 2008.
The library had moved from the original barbershop next door in 1941 and various other businesses, restaurant, beauty shop, etc. occupied that part.
The third store on the east, originally the City Meat Market, in 1921 became a bakery.  Seven different proprietors provided the area with their delicacies.
