Teacher, Dorothy Flood

Lake Harriet School

Typical interior of many rural schools of this period.  Note the thermometer hangs from the ceiling at the center of the room.  The wood-burning furnace on the right as the doors hanging open to let more heat into the room.  The globe hangs from the ceiling by a rope and pulleys so it can be pulled down.  Usually there was a large picture of George Washington and a map on a roller.  Note the attendance chart – “the Key to Success” and “Up the Steps to Health” a check list for good health habits.
