Soldiers Passing through Oregon

Cavalry soldiers in Oregon

Beginning a few years before World War I and continuing until the late 1930's, cavalry soldiers stationed at Camp Grant, Illinois would pass through Oregon every summer on their way to Camp Douglas, Wisconsin. They had summer exercises at Camp Douglas for two to three weeks and then came back through again on the return trip. On a few occasions they camped on a field located on Janesville Street, near State Street.
